Brevet Hiberniae
Brevet Hiberniae is a cycle touring challenge created by Eddie Dunne for Audax Ireland. Participants visit 128 designated landmarks across Ireland, 4 in each of the 32 counties, spanning all 4 provinces. Each visit requires a photo with your bicycle in frame as proof of passage. There is no time limit. You can read about the inspiration behind the challenge on the backstory page.
How It Works
Visit all 128 locations, take a proof photo at each one with your bicycle in frame, and record the date. Your progress is tracked per province and overall. When you complete all locations in a province, you can claim a province medal. Once all four province medals are claimed, you earn the Brevet Hiberniae award.
The 128 Locations
The locations are spread across all 32 counties of Ireland, with exactly 4 per county. They include historical sites, natural landmarks, monuments, and places of cultural significance. Each location has a description and backstory explaining its history and importance.
The four provinces and their county counts are:
- Connacht: 5 counties, 20 locations
- Leinster: 12 counties, 48 locations
- Munster: 6 counties, 24 locations
- Ulster: 9 counties, 36 locations
From the road: Locations can change in January each year. If you visited a location that has since been replaced, your visit still counts. You do not need to revisit the replacement.
Proof of Passage
At each location, take a photograph with your bicycle in front of the landmark. If the exact artifact is difficult to find or reach, a photo proving you visited the general site will suffice. Record the date of the visit. JPEG or PNG, up to 10 MB.
Province Medals
Custom medals are available for each province. When all four province medals are collected, they combine into a 4-section national medal. The medals are free of charge for Audax Ireland club members.
When a province is complete and you are ready to claim, email your proof of passage to [email protected]. See the official how it works page for full details.
The Brevet Hiberniae Award
After claiming all four province medals (Connacht, Leinster, Munster, and Ulster), the four individual medals combine into the full Brevet Hiberniae national medal. This is the ultimate recognition of completing the challenge: all 128 locations across Ireland.
